Dr. Martin Wohl

Dr. Martin Wohl has been an active dentist and member of communities in Western Massachusetts for 40 years. Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Brooklyn College of the City University of New York. Always being physically active, Martin participated in various team and individual sports with a special emphasis in fencing for decades beginning in high school, and earned collegiate NCAA All-American honors in Epee.

After graduating college he relocated to Washington, D.C. where he attended Georgetown University School of Dentistry. Along with earning his Doctor of Dental Surgery(DDS)degree in 1976, he was recognized with the honor of “Best Demonstration of Humanistic Qualities in Patient Care”. His comprehensive approach to patient care and chair-side attention continues to be a foundation of Wohl Family Dentistry.

A strong sense of social justice and responsibility has always guided Dr. Wohl in his career, with his first years upon graduating, providing dentistry at the Mother, Child and Infant Care Center in Northeast Washington. While in D.C. Dr. Wohl helped supervise a student service trip to the Dominican Republic, and along with dental students, provided dental care in remote rural areas bordering Haiti.

When recently married to educator and author Marisa Labozzetta in 1978, the couple relocated as Dr. Wohl joined the National Health Service Corps in Estancia, New Mexico. For three years he practiced as the sole dentist in rural Torrance county while he and Marisa grew their family with two daughters, Ariana and Carina.

With both their families on the east coast they moved to Northampton, Ma. in 1981. Martin became the first Dental Director for the Worthington Community Health Center, a consulting dentist at UMASS health services, established his part-time Northampton practice in 1982, and founded the Dental Dept. of the Huntington Community Health Center in 1988. After eleven years in the region, and the addition of son Michael to the family, Dr. Wohl expanded the Northampton office into the SilkMill building which grew to be his exclusive location while maintaining strong long-term personal relationships with many members of the Hilltown communities.

During the early 1990’s Dr. Wohl was at various times treasurer and president of the Hampshire Dental Society. In 1994 he founded and directed what is now the Northampton High School Fencing team; coaching and managing it until 2007. He is a co-founder, and Endowment Chair of the Northampton Education Foundation Endowment established in 2002, and was awarded the Northampton Community Enrichment award in 2007. His daughter Dr. Carina Wohl joined the practice in 2009 and they spent eight terrific years partnering side by side.

Before retiring from active practice with Wohl Family Dentistry, LLC at the end of 2016, Dr. Wohl became consultant and adjunct clinical instructor in the Dental Hygiene Dept. at Springfield Technical Community College(STCC). This presently continues to give him an opportunity to mentor others in his commitment of providing caring, attentive and high quality health care. He is a Lifetime member of the American Dental Association, Massachusetts Dental Society, and the Valley District Dental Society.

Before becoming Chair-elect and Chair of the Valley District Dental Society from 2018-2022, Dr. Wohl organized four Bi-Annual Community Dental Days held at STCC which provide free dental care for those living in and around Hampden county. Dozens of dentists, students, and dental professionals volunteer their services to make this possible.

Dr. Wohl remains very active in such local nonprofits as the Northampton Education Foundation, Grow Food Northampton, United Way of Franklin and Hampshire Counties, Center for New Americans, Abundance Farm and several others while continuing to hike, bike and ski; preferably with his local grandchildren Ethan and Luke.
